Three Things To Do To Get Ready for Back to (In-Person) School

By Nuria Santamaría Wolfe

Whether your child is going back to school or whether he or she is starting school for the first time, this back to school season will be a bit different. After more than a year of remote learning, many families are eagerly awaiting the return to campus.

So, if you’re like most parents experiencing a mix of excitement and concern, here are a few tips to make the transition back to in-person school a bit smoother for you and your preschooler.

Talk: Most schools will likely have new safety protocols that may include required masks, daily temperature checks, more frequent hand-washing, and mandatory hand sanitizing. Talk to your toddler about what they can expect when they return and why each of these activities is important. Consider using language they’re familiar with like “germs” instead of “virus” to help them understand the concepts easily.

Practice: Make sure your little one is comfortable with these procedures by practicing at home. For example, you can use your thermometer to practice doing a temperature check. Let your little one practice on you and the rest of the family to get comfortable with the process.

You can use this Canticos Wash Your Hands Song with Pin Pon video to talk about the importance of washing their hands clean before eating, after using the restroom, and after playing outdoors. Make each of these healthy habits fun by incorporating music, fun rhymes, and rewards.

Celebrate: This is a joyous occasion for little learners. Plan a trip to the ice cream shop or a playdate at their favorite park to commemorate the big day.  The more excited they are leading up to their return to school, the less first day jitters they will have.

While you wait for in-person school to re-open, you can try out some of our ideas to keep kids learning over the summer. Most importantly, don’t forget to have fun this back to school season; it will definitely be a special one for your little scholars in more ways than one.
